I think that reducing global
environmental damage should be handled by governments rather than individuals. Lack
of individual participation is a worrying concern and every single human has a
crucial role in joining hands with the government in reducing the harm caused
to the environment. But what can one individual do to protect the environment?
Very little, it may seem, especially compared to the power of governments and
huge industrial companies. For example, I
always remember to save energy by switching off lamps, my laptop and other
electronic stuff that I do not use permanently. Our next obligation is to
separate waste and throw garbage only in the designated areas. Driving vehicles
can also be environmentally friendly. For example, we have to avoid
accelerating the engines too rapidly or using the air conditioning where it
would be better to save energy and simply open the windows. Three people can ride
together in one car instead of driving three cars to work. We can also use
public transport, ride a bike, or simply walk. Working together with dozens, hundreds, or
millions of other people, we can influence and change state policies which are mostly
neglectful to our environment.
The rapid growth of urbanization and
industrialization causes a severe irrecoverable damage to our environment and
brings up countless social and ecological issues that require immediate and
effective solutions. The massive
pollution of rivers, lakes, seas and oceans and air, contamination of soils,
destruction of the ozone layer and deforestation is the result of human
careless interaction with nature, followed by awful consequences, it`s a sign
of deep the ecological crisis. Every day we throw away millions of tons of
garbage: plastic, metal and chemical wastes will not disappear for hundreds of
years, they are utilized in soil permanently poisoning it, so people
desperately need to use mostly biodegradable products and recycle our wastes. Many
natural resources like coal, gas, oil and others are not renewable, current
level of resource depletion is threatening, so humanity should necessarily
switch to the usage of alternative sources of energy. Thousands of plant and
animal species are under constant threat of complete extinction, that`s why
humans need to take urgent measures to preserve the wildlife in its natural
habitats for the future generations. Overpopulation control must be enforced by
government policy to avoid economic instability and to reach adequate amount of
resources consumption per year. The oxygen balance in atmosphere in human
habitats is broken by enormous exhaust fumes of millions of vehicles and causes
innumerous health problems. Because of global warming polar ice caps, our
planet`s largest natural water supply, are constantly melting, rising sea
level, and to stop this process we should stop burning fossil fuels. In
addition, it is vital that environmental issues are treated internationally. For
sure, joint efforts and consolidation can only help in the mutual struggle
towards the ongoing environmental collapse. For instance, governments should
offer support to companies and organizations, involved in manufacturing,
industry or agriculture in order to find eco-friendly approaches. These could
be special law regulations and multiple recycling programs, raising utilization
funds and many more.
We have the technological potential, the money and even
still enough time to make our planet a better, cleaner and safer place for
living in harmony with nature. If everybody made a small effort to improve
their local environment, upcoming degradation of ecosystem would be reduced
gradually and the global situation would finally improve.
