With the availability of information on the internet, public libraries
are no longer necessary. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this
statement?
People have been reading books for
ages and therefore libraries exist for centuries. Nowadays popularity of public
libraries is constantly decreasing. Will libraries disappear or will they live
forever?
In my opinion, libraries will soon
become part of the past. But there is nothing wrong with this situation. First
of all, paper books degrade over time, even if they are kept in special
storages at libraries. Consequently, all the books must be translated into a
digital form. Secondly, public libraries are giving way to online libraries,
which can give much faster access to a giant amount of books with one simple
click. Finally, public libraries no longer act as a place for studying, because
Internet offers various educational webinars, podcasts and virtual classes with
tutors.
On the other hand, many people say
that electronic books will never replace paper ones, because sitting and
reading from a screen can cause bad eyesight and obesity. Also libraries
provide a quiet environment where one can be motivated to read and learn.
Distractions of everyday life can kill the joy of reading.
Besides computers there are e-book
readers with special e-ink screens, which act like real ink and paper and can
make no harm to one`s health. Furthermore, despite calm atmosphere at public
libraries, such conveniences as toilet and having meals are not close at hand.
To sum up, I must say that public
libraries will exist maybe a couple of decades, but then they will disappear,
because we cannot stop technical progress.
